Clinton, De Blasio, and the Inner Circle

Hillary Clinton has once again proven herself to be perhaps the most gaffable candidate left in the presidential race. She and New York City mayor Bill De Blasio faced backlash for a joke they made during this past Saturday’s annual politician and media dinner called – and I swear to you I’m not making this up – the Inner Circle.

De Blasio said he was late to endorse Clinton because he was running on “CP time,” implying the disparaging term “colored people time.” “Hamilton” actor Leslie Odom, Jr., who joined them onstage, feigned offense until Clinton explained that De Blasio just meant “cautious politician time.”

Twitters were blown up, think pieces were written, and a whole lot of public shaming fun was had by all.

I can’t do this. I’m not writing a think piece. You don’t need any more of that, internet. Watch the thing, see what Trevor Noah said on The Daily Show, and do what you’ve got to do.

I want to talk about this politics/journalism mixer called Inner Circle. Can you believe that? What more proof do you need that we live in an oligarchy? People love to talk about conspiracy theories. What’s the theory? The elite are being elite right in front of us. Inner Circle is the most confidently fuck you name they possibly could have given that dinner.

What is this, a New Yorker cartoon? The politicians and journalists are all labeled “Inner Circle” and there’s a caption underneath the rest of us that reads “everyone else”? Is there a sign on their clubhouse door that says, “no masses allowed”?

If you’ll excuse me, I have to get to the Rich People Elite Secret Meeting of Lizard Overlords Fun Time.
